How we bring the DSISD Vision of Creating Innovators to life:

To empower ALL students

Access to & success in high-value learning opportunities

The learner experience at DSISD begins with providing every one of our learners with access to and success in high-value learning opportunities. These opportunities include a S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) based learning experience, authentic learning tasks through a project based and experiential approach to learning, the ability to earn 45 or more college credits towards an associates or bachelors degree through the Early College model, access to accelerated, Advanced Placement (AP) learning experiences beginning in 9th grade, and access to tech, medical and business sector Career Connect experiences, such as job shadows, professional mentorship, internship, and professional residencies.

Own their learning

Student driven, proactive and passionate approach to learning

What sets DSISD apart from virtually all other schools is our emphasis on supporting students with becoming self-directed learners who are passionate about guiding their learning experience. Being a self-directed learner is one of the most marketable skills in today’s high-tech and rapidly changing economy. Not only do students need to be able to self-direct in college, most top business and design firms today seek out employees who are able to learn rapidly and independently. In our competency-based approach, it is important to foster in students a sense of agency, through which they understand that they are in control of their learning experiences and through having a growth mindset and demonstrating habits of success they can achieve success at an advanced pace and depth of knowledge, if they choose. Where there are gap areas, they are coached by teachers and advisors on setting goals, making plans, and reflecting on the steps necessary for achievement. Students also create personal learner profiles through which they demonstrate their understanding of their own learning preferences and college and career interests.

Shape their dreams

Intentional opportunities for planning for the future

In addition to receiving a rigorous academic experiences in their core academic classes, students spend ample time engaging in Design my Future experiences. Experiences at DSISD are designed to help students identify and make progress towards endeavors they will passionately engage in as adults. These experiences include career explorations, job shadows projects that connect to real-world adult problems, college and career preparation courses, and college course work that can lead to transferable degrees.

Create a better world

Practice Local and Global Responsibility, Explore the World and Apply My Learning, Invest in Others and Lead for Social Justice

The innovators DSISD is designed to create will generate and apply creative energy to serve the greater good. Through thoughtful curriculum design and experiential learning opportunities such as intensives and service learning, students will explore the world and apply their learning as they learn about societal and environmental issues that require active citizenship and engage in community building activities that will strengthen and enhance their social skills. We teach students to be social entrepreneurs, engineers, inventors, and civic leaders who are able to make a positive impact in the businesses, organizations, and communities in which they serve. They will be critical thinkers, problem solvers, collaborators and effective communicators who will create a better world for all.
