A School of Choice: What Does that Mean?

TVImages_9 DSISD is a Denver Public Schools (DPS) School of Choice. This means that DSISD does not have a neighborhood enrollment zone and that EVERY student “chooses” to attend. Though we are located in central to Southeast Denver, we serve students from across the metro area. In our innaugural year DSISD had strong demand and the school exceeded 130% of its enrollment target. We have also had a large number of student transfer in as 9th and 10th graders. Students tend to choose DSISD for three primary reasons:

1. The school’s focus on personalization and emphasis on students taking personal ownership of learning

2. The college credit and career experience opportunies,

3. The two fold focus on S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) and leadership through Social Entrepreneurship .

As a small school with a unique design, DSISD is not for everyone. It is important that students and families understand the benefits of the school model, as well as its differences from traditional high schools, so they can make an informed decision. There are several ways that families can determine is DSISD is the right “Choice” for their child.

Student and Parent Shadow Days

It is our school community’s belief that students and families should be fully informed when they make their high school choice. Additionally, the DSISD school model is quite different from that of a traditional high school. We encourage all students and families to consider attending one of our Student and Parent Shadow days to better determine if DSISD is a good fit for a school community. Shadow days:

  • Generally occur on the 3rd Wednesday of each Month (9/21, 10/19,11/16, 12/7-1st Weds, 1/18, 2/15, 3/ 15, 4/19, 5/17)
  • Provide prospective students and families an overview of the school model and an opportunity to experience several key elements of the DSISD model, such as
    • Advisement through observing 1-1 mentoring and community building
    • Project Based Learning (PBL) through engaging in an actual STEAM project
    • Personalized Learning Time (PLT) through understanding the many ways students own their learning
  • End with a Q & A with the Principal or another DSISD Administrator.
